A subsidy for family holidays: The facts

You can apply for the grant as a family or as a single parent.

To receive a grant, you must meet the following conditions:

  • You must at least one child who is no older than 17.
  • You must live in the city of Bremen

The holiday may last a maximum of 21 days. There is no minimum stay requirement.

You can travel to non-profit holiday centers in Germany. An overview of these centers can be found on the website "Vacation with the Family" run by the Federal Association for Family Recreation (BAG). Several church parishes and family centers in Bremen also offer family retreats that may be eligible for funding from the Daniel Schnakenberg Foundation. Additionally, you can spend your vacation at the Schloss Dankern holiday center in Haren/Ems .

The amount of money you receive depends on your family's income. The allowance is a maximum of 15 euros per day per family member.

For single parents, alimony payments and childcare costs are deducted from their income. This does not apply to their monthly rent: this is taken into account as a flat rate in the income table.

The income of children who are not participating in the trip is not taken into account in the calculation.

  1. First, find a non-profit accommodation option (see: Where can we go?)
  2. Then you book your stay at the selected accommodation.
  3. To receive a grant, you must submit the following documents to us:
    • The completed application 
    • Your proof of income (copy of the current earnings statement, the current (complete) job center notification or, for self-employed persons, the income statement from the year before last)
    • A copy of the booking confirmation from the selected accommodation 

After we have reviewed your documents, we will inform you by post or email about the amount of the approved grant.

The subsidy will be transferred directly to your booked accommodation approximately two weeks before your trip begins. Please contact your accommodation provider directly to clarify when and how you need to pay your share of the costs.

You can submit an application to us every two years.
